Music lovers recall Prince concerts in Las Cruces

LAS CRUCES – News of the death of rock, R&B and pop artist Prince on Thursday stirred memories among Las Crucens of visits by the renowned performer to New Mexico State University.

Prince performed back-to-back shows — March 7 and 8 — at the Pan American Center in 1985, according to archives of the Round Up. It was the only location within the region to secure tour dates. Soon after the shows were announced in February of that year,campers appeared outside the Pan American Center, awaiting their chance to buy tickets at $17.50 apiece.

Las Crucen Corrie Stone-Fielder was among the attendees at both shows. She was 12 at the time and recalled her excitement at getting permission from her mom to attend along with one of her mother’s friends.

“It was amazing; he put on a great show,” she said.
