BioPark Experience: Feed the lorikeets

By Tina Deines, ABQ BioPark Communications Officer

As you enter the lorikeet exhibit, about a dozen birds linger around the small path, waiting for visitors to reach out with their white nectar-filled cups. These colorful Australian birds aren’t shy—they’ll come right up to visitors. During my visit, one brave bird even landed on a young girl’s head.

I made my way slowly around the exhibit, looking for the shyer birds so that they could share in the sweet goodness I was offering. Near the exit, I encountered three birds on a branch that each waited their turn. A fourth greedy bird forced its head into the cup and then stole it— I struggled in a tiny tug of war to reclaim my cup.

But fear not—feeding the ABQ BioPark’s lorikeets is a safe, interactive activity for kids and adults alike. Don’t forget to say hi to Max, the kookaburra, who watches over the group in quiet contemplation.

Visitors can take part in the lorikeet feeding experience from 10-11:30 a.m. and 2-3 p.m. on Wednesdays-Sundays until September 5. The outdoor exhibit is located in Australia, across from Koala Creek. Each cup of nectar is $2. Activity time: about 15 minutes.
