ABQtodo Summer Safety Tips

Summer is upon us and that means two things, SUN and of course FUN! We want to help keep you and your family safe this summer with some helpful tips. We’ve got tips when being in the sun, tips for barbecuing, tips for swimming and tips for kids and pets. With tons of fun here in Albuquerque like our city parks and pools and great events like Summerfest we know these tips can come in handy.

While in the sun, drink lots of water to stay hydrated.
Protect your skin from the sun.
Wear sunscreen with an SPF 15 or higher.
The larger the SPF number, the better and more protected you are.
Apply generously and often!
Wear protective clothing while spending a lot of time out in the sun. (hats, sunglasses and cover-ups.)
The sun is strongest between 11am and 4pm.
Early morning and afternoon are best times to have fun in the sun.

Never leave your kids in a hot car.
Keep your phone/handbag in backseat as a reminder to open the back door.
Playground equipment can heat up, check the temperature before allowing your kids to play.
Protect against mosquitos and other bugs by using insect repellent.
Always keep an eye on your kids while playing in the sun.

Never leave your pets in a hot car.
Provide pets with cool, fresh water at all times.
Avoid walking dogs on got sidewalks/asphalt that burns their paws.
Bring pets inside during fireworks displays.
Invite pets inside to enjoy the A/C too.

Keep your grill clean by removing grease or fat buildup from the grill and the tray below the grill.

Keep children and pets at least three feet away from the grill area.
Keep your grills away from the home, deck railing and out from under caves and overhanging branches.
If using propane, check the gas tank hose for leaks before using it.
If using charcoal, wait for coals to completely cool before disposing.
Be careful when burning or lighting fireworks due to high fire dangers. (more info: https://www.cabq.gov)

Swim in designated areas supervised by lifeguards.
Avoid swimming in arroyos and ditches. (More info here: www.cabq.gov/parksandrecreation)
Always swim with a friend.
Wear a life jacket when you go boating.
Actively supervise children whenever around the water.
Always stay within arm’s reach of young children.
